What are some common English slang words and what do they mean? I'm from the U.S. and I know what "bloke" and others refer to, but I'm quite ignorant of any others.

This should be entertaining...

Thanks beforehand!

Hello mate

mate = friend / buddy / dude (or however you yanks say it :D)

You already know bloke has the same meaning as Man, guy or person (usually used as a masculine word) Another word you could use instead of bloke is Geezer. It means all the same things as bloke but is just a different word.

To show that you think someone is great you could call them a Diamond Geezer. This means that you think they are great people. Eg. "Im gonna invite you to my mate, dont worry he's a diamond geezer."

There are English slang words for getting drunk too... one of our fav past times :)

Pissed, Wasted, smashed, wankerd, fucked and munted can all be used to describe how badly you got drunk (apologies for swearing but im using it in a educational context)

We can also use slang to describe what we think of how people look Minger, Munter, Hench are bad words to use when describing someone. This means you think they are ugly or fat

Words like, Fit, lush are words to say you think someone is attractive or good looking.

other odd words i can think of are

Blinding = awesome, wicked
Phat (pronounced fat) = awesome, wicked
Wanker = used on its own is a insult. Calling someone a wanker (usually men only) means they masturbate alot.
Tosser = same as wanker
Pikey (pronounced pike E) = Person or people who travel and live in mobile homes.

Sorry there was alot of swear words in that but those were the most obviouse ones i could think of and thought it would be intreasting to you anyway :)

Let me know if iv forgotten any

We have some wonderful slang in the uk, most relating to local parts of the country such as geordie(newcastle) Cockney (london), some are so unusual that unless you are a native to the area you would find it hard if not impossible to understand.

Here are but a few:
Apple and pears= stairs
titfertat= Hat
monkey or pony are slang for money ie £500
copper= police
a couple of links below will send you in the right direction.

2There are so many different slang words throughout the UK I would not realy know where to start, try this: 2You're having a girraffe ain't ya,meaning you are having a laugh, or trying to pull a fast one, jockey's whips =chips, joe baxi= Taxi, going for a Ruby Murry? = would you like to go for a curry,I'm sure you will get plenty of various answers to this q.... But this is one of my favourite Lancashire sayings I learned from a friend....... "You could'nt stop a pig in a ginnel" meaning to insult someone who is fat and useless(no offence btw) or how about, borasic lint, meaning skint, moneyless, poor...

Not an easy thing to do as the UK has many different regional dialects therefore the slang varies accordingly.

I have to answer this to refute one of the earlier answers.

"bint" is an offensive and derogatory word used to describe a woman.

Thought of one: 'snogging' means kissing. An American asked about that one the other day.
