thank you for the asnswers so far but the heat shield seems to be in the way and is not allowing it to go in all the way

These are a pain in the butt at the best of times. What I used to do is fit a bolt into the end of the dipstick tube that just barely fits inside. Then I would clamp onto the tube and bolt so as the tube squeezes the bolt hard. Then I would use a hammer to tap up on the vise grips that would pull the tube out of the block. To install, I would fit a small wrench onto the flared part of the tube at the bottom and tap on the wrench until the tube bottoms into block.

lift the truck into the air,look on the back of the engine block directly above thetransmission there is a bolt that holds the tube in place!

pull the old one out ..tap the new one in with a small hammer
