The are held for investigation. If the police do not find any evidence of illegal activity charges will most likely not be filed.

Although there are exceptions like your friend, most people who are passengers in a high speed chase are not there against their will. So this set up at least the suspicion of participation or complicity in something, for the driver would have not been in a high speed chase just for the heck of it.

Because passengers in a felon's vehicle are as guilty as the driver in 99% of the cases.

And I should add that I'm all in favor of such people being executed on the spot along with the driver.

The driver is obviously a thug. If you hang out with thugs, bad things will happen. It's quite simple.

Your friend was arrested, what was the charge? Can he convince a Judge that he's innocent?

STUPID really but untill the police are shure of motives and suspects every one is detained and questioned....

Till the story is either proved or one admitts that they where the sole suspect your friend is gunna stay under the heat for a little while

His best bet is a Lawyer ...just to be shure
