Inferno has been used by DC Comics as a female superheroine who is a member of Legion of Super Heroes, and it's been used by Marvel as the name of crossover in comics, a character in Ghostrider comics, and one last time as the name of some other character.

I want to use Inferno as the name of a male supervillain for my super hero. Now can I use this name or not? If I can't could you suggust a replacement word that still works.

The character you copyright is described not only by a name, but also the image, since it is a comic book. That is what makes your character distinct from the others.

If you wish, you could check a thesarus (I hear they even have them on line, now) for an alternative.

Did you want a synonym for the fiery place of torment, like Hades, Gehenna, Tartaus...?

Or did you want one for an out of control fire, like wildfire, flashover, ignition...?

Good luck with your villain!
