The carpet is only 4 months old. Also, I'm not referring to a 'pee smell', but the regular dog smell.

Seriously? Remove the carpet. That smell is all the way down into the padding and everything. People would rather see an inexpensive clean carpet then smell beagles. You can get a fairly good carpet for a reasonable cost from some of the outlet places. It may cost you a couple of grand depending upon the size of your house, but if it saves you two months in carrying costs, it is WELL worth it. Also, some people have nice wood or tile under the carpets. If that's the case, just cleaning that might work as well.

If the carpets are only five months old. Have the carpets steam cleaned from someone like Stanley Steemer or do it yourself. Let them know the carpets have been soiled by the pets so they can properly clean it. EDIT: hmmm Steam cleaning the carpets should get rid of the odor. Try giving your dogs a bath at the same time you clean the carpets to help redepositing the odor back into the carpets. You could also try ARM & HAMMER Pet Fresh Carpet & Room Deodorizer. Also if the dogs are allowed on the couches make sure you clean those too. I hope this helps.

When I moved into our "new" house the previous owners had two dogs/cat and smoked. It smelled and we had a flea infestation to boot....! So, I bought 12 lbs. of baking soda and a 3 lb. box of salt from the wholesale club and liberally sprinkled the carpet(s) and let it sit at least overnight... The baking soda is a natural odor neutralizer and the salt will pick up any loose dirt and brighten the carpet. It works and it's really cheap it was around $10 for everything... You may have to replace the filter on your vacuum but, that's not the end of the world ! It's also not harmful to animals/children.

Stanley Steamer! Or another professional company. The carpet shampooers you can buy from the stores wont cut it. Pro's use steam and it takes out most every smell and stain that the normal residental shampooers just can't. Its really not that expensive either... 99 dollars for 3 rooms...

Actually you can. Someone mentioned that pro's use steam, this is inaccurate, and perhaps was fact 10+ years ago. There are no actual steam cleaners anymore, but HOT WATER EXTRACTORS, as well as cold water extractors. Locate a local janitorial supplier, they are all over. You need an odor enzyme type product. Picture enzymes as little pac-man GOOD guys that are live germs living in your carpets, and/or drains. These enzymes will "digest" the odor, and actually kill germs. You can just get it in quart bottles, and use a trigger type sprayer and spray-mist into your carpets, and the smell WILL leave. Same for cigarette smells/odors.

A professional is the only way to go. The hard part is going to be finding a place to store your dogs so they don't stink the place up again. I recommend a boarding kennel until your house is sold.
