I've not played FFXII yet, I've held off from buying it simply because I'm not sure if will like the new battle system, I've heard it is good but I am such a huge fan of the old battle systems.
I think FFX had the best battle system, I loved the way you could switch characters and weapons in the middle of a battle. I think FFVII had the best storyline, Sephiroth is the coolest bad guy ever!
I liked FFVIII but the junction system and drawing magic from enemies could get quite repetitive.
FFIX was a great game too, I loved all the weird and wacky characters like Vivi, Quina and Amarant.

My opinion on FF12 is that it is a great game. I've played every FF and own almost all of them, but 12 is probably my fifth favorite. I thought that the fighting system was a nice change but I loved the old Fixed time battles as well so what ever the next game is I'll like it. Everyone has been saying the story line is shallow but I dont feel that way at all. It is a lot different from the previous FF because they leave out the love story which is actually a nice change of pace I thought and FF12 brought a political storyline into the series which was nice. It was a more believeable story line becuase it wasnt just some all powerful enemy who wanted to destoy the world it was a corrupt leader of a nation who wanted total control. I'm guessing that most people found it shallow because they liked the love storys and the saving the whole world aspect, which I myself have no problem with. The side quests in 12 were alot harder then those in most of the previous games. For instance FFX had some of the easiest side quests ever. I got all of the ultimate weapons with out to much difficulty and that dissapointed me. I agree that the battle system should be revaped if there going to use it againa and that the bosses should be harder seeing as how I beat the game with level 45 characters, I would have liked a little more challenge. But then again some of the side quests were really challenging and I licked being able to use strategy with my team so that I wouldnt have to tell them what to do.
All in all its really not a bad game and maybe it didnt quite live up to its hype, but it still deserves at least an 8.5 out of 10.
My list of top five FF would be: 7, 9, the american 6, 12, and 10.

First, I am a Final Fantasy Freak. Love the series. I have every game from FF. Personal fave was 8. I don't care what everyone else says. That was a great game. As far as FF12 goes, I don't like it that much. Something about it just doesn't feel like Cloud and Squall made you feel. The game is to wide open. The adventure is good but the story line isn't. My opinion on the battle system is negative as well. If they were going to have a more real time combat system then they should have designed it to use action buttons on the controller, instead of having to specify what person does what at what part of the battle. So, yea I would give the new FF12 a 5 out of 10. Great graphics though.

Pretty huge fan, I have all the games in the series including the other ones Squaresoft released but not having the FF tag to it (Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire, FF tactics, Xenogears etc.) Somehow these games feel like they belong in the same universe, minus the chocobos of course. I actually miss Squaresoft as opposed to SquareEnix. The games seem more polished in the past. They took more time into creating entertaining gameplay along with storyline and everything else, as opposed to just amazing CG nowadays. Don't get me wrong, Lightning is a babe, but it doesn't stop the first half of FF XIII from being garbage. I still got platinum for that game though lol. For the record, 7,9, 10 and 12 were awesome. I wasn't a fan of 8. Squall seems too much like a tool, and the whole draw system I didn't like at all. Final Fantasy forever! xD

I'm about halfway through Final Fantasy 12 and I like it. Yeah maybe the story isn't as deep as Xenogears, but I think the translation job and the dialogue is very well done. The voice-acting is also great. The dialogue isn't cheesy like what usually happens to American translations.
As far as the battle system, I do miss the old type, but I think the Real Time system has its pluses as well. Leveling up isn't as tedious, and the game pacing is quicker. However, you're right, I do enjoy boss fights more in the previous FFs.
Of course no Final Fantasy has topped Final Fantasy 6, the best of all time.

I loved FFXI, so i was already used to the free style fighting. I am a huge fan of the turn based fighting, so I was a bit worried about the new battlesystem....
Surprisingly, I loved every bit of the FFXII fighting. I loved the gambit commands and free style running around with no random battles - it saved so much time without the battle loading\unloading screens...
As for the storyline, I thought it definately could have used some work, and had somewhat of a disappointing ending... but overall I liked how everything progressed.
7 and 9 were my favorites!
I think it was a great idea and really hope they continue with this type of system throughout their next Final Fantasy games :)

I feel the same way as you do. Final Fantasy 12 was not all what is was cracked up to be. But it was still interesting. My favorite Final Fantasy's was 7 and 10 even though i love all final fantasy's. I am playing Valkyerie Profile now, the game kinda caught me of guard but now it's very exciting, have you played it?

It's an opinionated topic. Some will enjoy the classic battle systems and old mechanics, while others will enjoy the new gameplay.
As far as story is concerned, I do agree that it is shallow at best. The first character you take control of quickly becomes a backseat character, which is very contrary to XII's predecessors.
All in all, your personality reflects your favorite games, and no one should judge you. I myself found VII and VIII to be more thrilling than IX, X, and XII.

I enjoyed FFXII. I really liked the battle system, gambits, hunts, and the fact that anyone could learn any magick, wield any weapon, and wear any armor (as long as it was unlocked on the license board). I'll agree that the storyline and character development wasn't as deep as previous FF games. Also, I found that between all the hunts and side-quests, it was easy to forget a lot of the early storyline. I played through it a 2nd (and 3rd) time, and enjoyed it even more because I could focus on the storyline.

Hah, I'm still in the process of playing it and playing FF8, but I don't like it at all. My favourites are mostly the 2d ones, 4 5 and 6 are great and 9 is fantastic. 8 is quite good and so is 7, but 12 doesn't cut it.
