The senior executives at Exxon all earn well over a million dollars per year. The california firemen do not. At the end of their careers which group will have made the world a better place to live in?

While it's nowhere near the compensation of Exxon, CA firefighters are actually well paid.

The people I feel really bad for are the police officers! They make like half of what firefighters make, and they are doing just as important of a job.

Hard to tell. A lot depends on how each person lives their personal life. While I often think that executives are over paid and firemen underpaid, each job has it's own pay scale and there's not much we can do about it.
