Judging by the availability and the gross amount consumed per year - it is an American icon.

Using the same logic, availability and gross amount consumed per year, that would make cocaine an American icon too.

Did you know coca (cocaine) was once an ingredient in Coca Cola?

Mark has this right... to which I would like to add. It was one of the first major American transnational companies AND it was, peculiarly enough, in defiance for many years with the federal government over the use of coca (that's as in blow, not chocolate) among its ingredients. It was a powerful buzz for many years and that gave it a popularity historically over the old sasparilla type kid sodas. In fact, in the south, you stil hear it referred to as dope, even though the stuff was taken out and replaced by massive amounts of caffeine and high corn fructose (the heroin of processed sugars)

Or is that Ford, Tide, Jell-O, or Warren Buffett?
