How many characters can I use?

I will assume six.

There are 6 choices for the first character, times 6 choices for the second character, ... = 6^6 = 46656 combinations.

If you're asking purely how many combinations using three numerical digits in a row and three letters in a row, the answer is 17576000. However in some places they put the numbers and letters on different sides, so that raises it to 35152000. On the other hand, in some places certain letters (like O and Z) aren't used becaues they look too similar to numbers, which would reduce the number of combinations slightly. You have to specify your rules more precisely in order to get a more accurate answer.
