There are two questions here. Because you are asking us to compare public humiliation with private solitary confinement.

This will always depend on the crime and also, which is often overlooked, depend on the person who is being punished. Some will benefit from one method while some the other, and then some to neither.

The second question you raise is whether Corporal Punishment is more effective.

I would say that I couldn't care less and that if you break the law you should get a lashing, kicking, beating etc whether in public or behind closed doors makes no difference to me.

Whether that would be more beneficial to the criminal than solitary confinement isn't an issue. As soon as you break the law you forfeit any right to any civilised humane treatment.

I think so. If I were Empress of the World, I'd bring back chain gangs. I'd put cons on road crews, mowing crews and other unpleasant manual tasks which would help states by supplying free labor instaed of letting them sit around cells hatching plans, getting 3 squares andtying up the courts with suing over getting bigger pieces of cake and other dumb things.
Instead of arresting prostitutes, they should publish names, photos and sexual deviancies of the johns.
i think public humiliation is a good deterrent to crime. Solitary is more personal, and punishes a person who is already in jail. I mean, they're already in jail. So you deprive them further to get your point across.
Hate to admit it, but I think public beatings would help decrease overcrowded prisons.
