This is the one political issue I am honestly without an opinion on. I would say it was the easy way out, but our prison system is really soft these days. If we still had places like Alcatraz or the way Leavenworth Penn used to be, then the death penalty would be unnecessary--the prison would be punishment enough. However, since everything is considered cruel and unusual punishment these days, prison is a pretty easy place to be and the death penalty is the only scary thing there is for them.
I think it would be alot more effective if we told them "You will receive the death penalty...sometime," instead of giving them an exact date and time. It would be after enough time for them to have an appeal, of course, but after that--the only ones who would know would be the ones who are in charge! THAT would be real punishment! You could die tomorrow, or 10 years from now, but you know it is definitely coming sometime in the near future.

Okay, I know the christians are going to take away points but here goes.... I agree there is a place for it.. I think each case has to be individual, I dont believe in case law because it sets the bar for future criminals when in fact every crime should be tried alone and decided alone as not all are the same, or even remotely.... if someone is a predatory killer, its best they not be alive, they will kill again as soon as they are released... or predatory child molesters or killers... for sure... get rid of them, you cant help them, they arent right in the head... domestic crimes..... well.... depends.. usually someone who kills someone they know isnt going to go on a rampage.. usually but again... try the case in its indivuality and make a decision based on it and it alone... if the law was set up this way it would be better... case law should not be part of the equation in any seeking of the death penalty. And for all those people who cry "what about executing the innocent" well yes, it will happen but the numbers will be miniscule compared to the saving of future innocent victims... so accidently kill two people as opposed to about 100 who are victims of violent senseless crimes... i could live with that.

If you could be absolutely, 100% certain, in every single case that the person who was sentenced to death was actually guilty of the crime, then I would be in favor if the Death Penalty.
But, if there is any chance that an innocent person anywhere could be wrongly convicted and executed, then no.
So, unless you can absolutely, 100% come up with a system that cannot make mistakes and cannot be corrupted by anyone bending it to their personal agenda, and will NEVER EVER convict an innocent person, then the Death Penalty should not be used.

I haven't been following that particular story, as I am in Cleveland, so it's not on our local news. But I completely support the death penalty in such heinous crimes. It is sad that it comes to this, but you cannot guarantee a criminals rehabilitation. I would loe nothing more than this guys feeling complete remorse for what he's done. For him to be completely broken for what he's putting the officer's family through--have him serve his time and go on with life. But it doesn't always work that way. He killed somebody (I'm assuming in cold blood-as I do not have the facts) he owes his life. Why should it be paid for by taxpayers that he gets to stay in prison and live the rest of his life? That's how I feel about it. I realize it is a controversial topic....

They should of just shot her right there after she got the death penalty. There's no point in just waiting until you can spend thousands on Lethal Injection. Why should you pay money to kill a murderer "humanely?" A bullet in the back of the head would be fast, affective, and save us a lot of money. The murderer wouldn't even feel it, and if s/he did, then it would only be for a quick second. It's bad enough that she'll just die in prison (Which is worse in my opinion. The death penalty is a lot more humane) before we actually use the lethal injection on her.

I don't agree with the death penalty,i have a friend who was executed in Texas last April yes he committed crimes but his punishment should have been life in prison. To take away someones freedom is punishment to kill them is not as they are dead and the only ones then suffering are the family who still loves them.Just because someone we love commits a heinous crime why should we have to pay ?To clarify things they don't get to say goodbye to family like you see on TV there is no physical contact just a usual visit behind glass.

The Death Penalty was much more of a deterrent to stopping crime just as the strap in school was a deterrent for serious acting out , anti-social behaviour.

I approve of the death penalty for the worst or crimes. Such as pre-meditated, cold blooded murder. Most of all, I feel the death penalty is just for kidnapping, abusing and killing children. I cried my heart out while I watched the verdict of the Jessica Lunsford murder trial. I could cheerfully put that low life sob in a garbage bag and bury him alive, just like he did to that beautiful little girl!!

I am for and against the death penalty!
I believe that if you take someone elses life, you should pay by having your life ended!! Only as long as there is complete evidence that the person commited the crime
However, giving someone the death penalty is just as bad as someone commiting murder!

I'm from Macedonia, so I don't know much about your law, but I honestly don't believe in death penalty. In 2001 year in my country was war, and according to most people (including me) many people deserve to die (for their kiillings during the war), but on other hand who gave us the right to take somebody's life? Only One will judge us!
