He wanted to have both political and religious power. In that way he would answer to no one.
So far, the pope was the only one who could keep kings in a leash. Henry wanted to be his own master

izzie's badly written reply is a VERY GOOD answer. It deserves the 10 points. Henry's times and circumstances have to be considered, To break with Rome, at the time, was not just a religious or a trivial (divorce me or else) matter since the Pope had actually a big political clout and a sovereign nation must not allow foreign potentates to be able to decide its life.

Henry VIII didn't want to divorce his wife, he wanted to annul their marriage. There is a difference. He also went ahead with declaring himself head of the Church of England in order to assure that not only would the annulment work, but also that his soul would go to Heaven in spite of being excommunicated from the Catholic Church.
Another cause for the founding of the Church of England included the Lollards' demand of the reformation of the Catholic Church which began the ideas of the English Reformation.

Henry the 8th had one big problem ...big kingdom, no son and an ageing wife! He needed a new wife that vould give him the heir that the country neeeded (plus in love with anne boleyn). his solution was that since Katherine of aragon had been briefly married to his brother arthur, before his death, henry claimed that it was against the laws of the church
and that his marriage was therefore never legal and sought to have it annulled. She was given the choice to retire and allow him to remarry but refused because she believed in the legality of her marriage and because denying her marriage was disinheriting their daughter mary! Usually the pope would have been eager to please a powereful king like henry however the Queen katherines nephew the holy roman empepro of spain had recently captured the vatican and such an insult agianst your capters aunt was not wise ...so refused to annul it. This laed Henry to his only real option refusing the popes authority and pass a law which declared that only english courts can decide on english matters. This lead him to be excommunicated and him setting up the church of england putting him in a position to annul his own marriage and take over the papel estates which owned about 25% of land in england. So not only did he annul his marriage but he and the other nobles of england increased their incomes dramatically by taking over and looting the abbeys, monastries and churches of england and collecting the taxes previously for the church for themselves. another reason you might say is that he was dissilllusioned with the corruption in the church at the time and was presuaded by anne boyeln to join the reformation. not likely his reasoning considering his motivations but i suppose he wanted to convince himself that he was still going to heaven etc..... also his convictions towards the religion where not very solid as during his marriage to jane seymor he almost converted back to catholicism and there was talks of a reconcilition with the pope but then she died and he married anne of cleves (verybriefly before divorcing her) who was a protestant and then the protestant cousin of anne boyeln, Catherine Howard.
