It's because he's "dead" but brought back to life by these mysterious freak accidents.
The look is just to add to the "horror".

Jason was born that way, he was deformed at birth. the original friday the thirteenth wich doesnt have jason in it till the very end, is the story of his mothers revenge for his death and the original tells the story of jason vorhees and where he origanated from. He was a member of the camp and the other kids picked on him for being deformed and chased him into the water and jason could not swim. he was not saved by the counslers cuz they were busy off having sex and not watching the children . that is why he kills teens that do drugs and have pre maritial sex.. its a pet peve he has..

He had a condition like down syndrom when he was little and he was teased a lot for his face like this that is why he wears the mask. His face looks so bad in the movies because it is supposed to be the aftermath of when he was drowning and that makes your skin look soggy so thats why it is so wierd-looking.

blame his mother. the first friday the 13th was filmed in the town I used to live. I really think Jason still lives there (blairstown, nj and the surrounding area)

he was had cancer or some disease and when he was young and the lifeguards were having sex instead of watching the kids threw him into the lake and he drowned...im sure his face was eaten away underwater and plus he was burned and a whole bunch of stuff happened to him...plus they may just do it to be scary...i dont know lol
