This bug is black and looks like spider to me, probably about 3" in diameter (including the legs)but since it jumped on my face I didn't really get a good look at it. My boyfriend insists that it was some type of cricket. Then we just saw another one - very long legs and when my bf when to swich it would jump away. I live in northern NJ and have never seen this bug. Does anyone know? I searched online, but no luck Thanks.

Just to clarify - the bug didn't make noise like a cricket - at least not when I saw it. I do not have a pic, but if I see another I;ll take one. I think it had 6 legs, but I can't be sure. I really hate bugs and usually run when I see them. Can't even squish um - yuk.

Probably a Field Cricket. Big and black/dark brown; often comes into houses in the fall, humongous jumper, pretty hard to catch.

Yes, it could be a black cricket. I have never seen them outside, but you sure can hear them. If they are in your home you should be able to hear them at some point. Have you checked your basement?

Crickets don't always make noise...
