but what do ambassadors do?

Using your lead in..it would appear they ambass. That's a funny word.

An ambassador is a diplametic official accredited to a foreign sovereign or goverment, or to an international organization, to serve as the offical representative of his/her own country. So I would say an amb. serves his/her country'.

they are the head of the embassy, they meet with foreign press and diplomats, and help people from their country in the host country.
