As being in favor of Ethnic Cleansing as they support the President in his efforts to appease the Turkish aggressors?

Or is their a deeper purpose, like a warning to the Turks that they face International Sanctions and NATO Military resistance if they carry out their plans to invade Iraq and renew their campaign of genocide against the Kurds?

Strongest allies, Mayor? Are we talking about the same Turkey that raised the death toll in the initial invasion of Iraq by not letting Coalition Forces stage out of Turkey? The same Turkey that still doesn't allow it's ports and airports to be used for resupply? The same Turkey that has pinned down US forces badly needed elsewhere in order to deter and even turn back a few raids in Northern Iraq? The same Turkey that was only willing to participate in NATO exercises if the simulated enemy was the Greeks? The same Turkey that fought on the German side in WWI and was a passive Axis member in WWII?

I want to be clear on this, because if they are an ally, the don't seem to have ever been a worthwhile one. Sadam Hussein did more to further US interests than Turkey has ever done. And that ain't saying much!

In case anyone is not familiar with the Resolution, here's the link.

The Armenian Genocide happened 92 years ago, Diva. Bush the First and later Bill Clinton had to impose a no fly zone in the kurdish areas of Iraq and Turkey slow down Turkish ethnic cleansing against the Kurds.

It's not uncommon for a nation to continue to deny past atrocities. Japan still refuses repsonsibility for it's role in the Second World War and only grudgingly admits the basics of the Rape of Nanking.

I disagree. Armenian-Americans have been lobbying and protesting for official recognition for DECADES. For Armenians, it has nothing to do with Democrats versus Republicans, or the war in Iraq. All we want, is the official recognition of an event that happened to our people, by the government we live, work, vote and pay tax in.

So far, 24 countries, including the European Union have recognized the Genocide.

Don't you think that a Genocide that has been denied for 92 years should be recognized as an actual event?

The resolution is non-binding, it is merely symbolic.
All it means is that: from this point on, the U.S. officially accepts what happened to the Armenians as a "genocide"..The "g" word causes problems with Turkey...
In fact, in Turkey, if you say the "g" word in terms of the Armenians, you are thrown in prison..(Penal code 301).

Secondly, if we recognize past crimes against humanity, we will be in better position to reprimand the on-going ones, like Darfur. What kind of messege would the U.S. be sending by vetoing it?

Tom Lantos, mentioned that Turkey needs the U.S., more than the U.S. needs Turkey. As always, when a country recognizes the Armenian genocide (like Canada and France), Turkey bitches about it for a couple weeks, then gets over it.

I would like to mention that back during Bushs' election, my family recieved a letter from George f-ing Bush himself, PROMISING us, that if elected, he would recognize the Genocide..and like idiots, the Armenian-American community believed it, and voted for him!

All we want, is the dignity that has been denied to us..for 92 years.

Well, this is an interesting question, but it is one we (you too, pal) should not try to politicize anymore then it has already.

Facts, Turkey is somewhat of an ally, yes I know, a poor one, but still somewhat our so-called friend. Do we risk losing a ally?

For the record, what Turkey has done before was wrong and they also do have a right to defend themselves against Kurds or anyone who attacks them. They should also stop harassing the Kurds who live in Turkey. Plus Iraq and the US should do all they can to stop the Kurd attacks from Iraq.

Not sure, but maybe they should carve out a country for the Kurds out of the portion of Iraq they live in. They wont be able to take over parts of Turkey or Iran that have Kurds living there already without a fight, nor should they. But they can do so in Iraq with the understanding no large army, only a heavy duty police force with a treaty with the US, Iraq, Iran and Turkey. Any other suggestions?

Twenty two other nations have condemned the Armenian Genocide. There are over 2 million Armenian Americans, most of them emigrated as a direct result of the genocide and have ancestors that were killed. Many of these Armenian Americans are represented by the Democrats who introduced this resolution. It should be plain to see that the Turks are looking for any justification possible to carry out another Genocide of the Kurds.

At last!

Somebody else here actually understands what the Democrats are doing.

But you're gonna get cons gibbering the usual"democrats hate our allies and love the terrorists" crap. You can't get it through their heads the Turks are the terrorists, who have not only spent decades murdering, raping and oppressing the Kurds, they have caused hundreds of thousands of Christians to flee Turkey over the past few decades through acts of violence and intimidation.

I'm not sure the Dems are thinking that deeply. Pelosi and others represent constituencies with sizeable Armenian populations. This is simply about her and her cronies getting re-elected. Her lack of any comprehension of foreign policy is making the war harder that it needs to be and is hurting relations with a key, if imperfect, US ally. This is what happens when you let the desire to gain votes override the impetus to govern well.

Tell me how alienating an ally is helping anything in today's war effort? By trying to get this passed Pelosi and Reid are guilty of undermining the safety of our troops. Tell me if the Turks get angry over this are you going to try to shift things around in your mind so that Bush is responsible for Turkey changing sides and working as our enemy instead of our ally?

No it just proves that the democrats are stupid to blame the The Truk's for what the Ottoman Empire did and weaken relations with a NATO ally possibly cause WWIII. It is to bad we can't sell it on ebay like Rush sold his.

It also shows the left is willing to get US troops killed for politcal gain.
