bad writers and over-inflated egos, oversaturation. Can anyone make this work?

I don't know, I think Lulu is among the more honest and open vanity presses. They don't promise what they can't deliver.

That said, self-publishing is generally a terrible idea for fiction. However, more and more people are willing to invest in pay-to-publish than in perfecting their craft through hard work.
