use the dropdown list to choose jpeg when u save it ..

Windows Picture Formate is Bitmap. its the Windows Version so its going to be the default version. Maybe Vista changes that, because there is really no good reason to use Bitmap over Jpg anymore.

while saving the file use the save as type dropdown list and change bitmap to jpeg

How are you saving the files? What program are you using? Windows itself as no way to save an image as bitmap or anything else. It is the software program you are using that is doing it. Without knowing what software you are using, and how, it is difficult to answer the question.

But you can use MS Pain (included free with Windows) to convert bmp into jpg or other formats. Below where you type the file name, change the file type.

you have to use a pic viewer soft like acdsee.windows only use bitmap by default.

When you are saving the picture use the little dropdown menu to select 'JPEG'
