Well said Alberto, "in that order"...?
......Russian Army CLEANED Russia and pushed the enemy till Berlin with a help.
Didnt want to bring that one, i see the good side of it: people are forgetting, means healing is in process, but for some reason its scary how politics can influence the history books and education.

Yes, people died, but because enemy was defeted, there was a victory, big one, and it makes everyone whos gone fighting for a peace a hero and their life which were taken even more preciouse for us who alive. Saying nobody won means they die for nothing.

yes, sure, THGURKA, you can call it a "pro-russian inclinations", that alot of people dont even know what was going on during the war, ..and thanks to history teachers.
yes ur last comment very interesting: "Not a moral interrogation, not a judgment on the fairness, usefulness or uselessness of war.", but u did like the answer of ALB_4, though it was more about economics?!
I do take off my hat for ur detailed knowledge of a lot of aspects of WW2, but your pointing out on RUSSIANs in SS, do u think its a surprise..?!.. U can find traitors in any nation, there were german soldiers who fight with nazi, its very personal. For the rest it was an answer to people who reply on what they reply, not a " moral interrogation, not a judgment on the fairness, usefulness.." ...and "was trained in Russia" doesnt mean anything, if i study in States and become a killer its my responsibility not contry's. "Enemy at the Gates" is a shame movie with a wrong message and its not about russians in WW2

The United States and the allies. It was an alliance between UK, US, Russia. Then after germany was defeated, the Americans devoted there strength to defeating the japanese. Stlain promised to help defeat japan, but I think that it was the reason that the US dropped the bomb on japan. It kept Stalin out of Japan, unlike the situation in Eastern Europe.

Strange how folk have almost missed your main point, USSR beat the Germans!
Strange how folk don't want to know that the other 'allies' were actually debating about trying to take over the USSR while all this was ongoing?
Yes history is written by the victor and not by any means a true account.

The British Commonwealth and Russsia, supported by USA, Holland, Norway and the Free French, Poland, Greece and Belgium.
It must be pointed out that the French fought on both sides during the war. In my opinion they were responsible for it happening as well. If they hadn't invaded Bavaria and beaten up the locals its unlikely the Nazi's and Hitler would have got off the ground.

The Allies: Britain, Canada, USSR, the US, China, Australia, New Zealand and the contingents of exiled soldiers from occupied countries like Poland, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, Free France, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia plus the Indian army of the British Empire and other countries such as Brazil and Mexico, defeated the
Axis: Germany (including Austria), Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Japan, Thailand.
Although someone didn't like alb_4's answer, its the truth. The US implemented the Marshall (for Gen. George Marshall) Plan to reconstruct Western Europe. West Germany took full advantage of the opportunity to become a power again. Although the same plan was not applied in Asia, the communists indirectly helped Japan when they commited the folly to invade South Korea and start the Korean War. Japan became the UN base of operations and profited tremendously. The US was the main contingent of the allied effort to defend South Korea and the money they poured in Japan helped to build their economy to standards far superior to those existing before 1939.
Italy, Romania and Bulgaria switched sides just before the end of the war.
I see there is a pro-Russian inclination of some participants. Although the effort and sacrifice of the Russian people is not a matter of argument, it should be remembered that in 1939 and until June, 1941, the Soviets were busy invading and occupying part of Poland in accordance with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The brunt of the conflict, from 1939 to 1940 was not on the Soviet side.
WWII History is very complex and cannot be studied or grasped with a bias. It was not black and white. For those who only seem to see one side, check several history books, not just magazine articles. You'll be amazed to find out that in the German SS there were troops from France, Norway, Belgium, Holland and RUSSIA. That the Luftwaffe was initially trained inside Soviet Russia and by Russians to circunvent the Versailles Treaty limitations.
And the question was simple, who won?. Not a moral interrogation, not a judgment on the fairness, usefulness or uselessness of war.

Really, there are more than one phase of a war. While the Allied nations did win the military part war (US, UK, France, USSR), the Axis nations (Germany and Japan) certaily won the economic part of it. After the war, both countries were devastated by constant Allied bombings. The countries needed to be rebuilt. Who did it? The West, primarily as a bulwark against the fear of encroaching communism. When Germany and Japan were rebuilt, they got all the latest tech of the time, while the US still had steel mills and tech mostly from the Industrial Revolution. We built them up, which is one reason why Japan and Germany have become such major economic powers.

Militarily it was won by the US, UK, Soviet Union.
Economically it was won by Japan and Germany. They had their industrial base destroyed and rebuilt using newer technology. Both soon became industrial powerhouses.
Politically the winners were the previous colonies of France, Britain, Belgium, Italy, Germany and the other Imperial powers which which became independent by the mid 1960s. The old powers had been weakened by the war and could no longer afford colonial possessions.
And finally everyone won with the destruction of Hitler and his totally evil empire.
And everyone lost because of all the millions of lives taken, and innumerable cases of human misery and suffering.

Peculiar how so many people think the USSR was one of the Allies, it was not. The Allies and the USSR were not allied together, they simply had a common enemy.
The Allies, UK, USA, the Free French, Canada and others, liberated Europe from the western front, while the Soviet army "liberated" Europe from the eastern front.

Phurface got it spot on; nobody wins a war, everybody loses. Sure, Britain, America and Russia were victorious but lost millions of people, not just the armed forces. Japan and Germany suffered heavily. So who would you say were the winners?
