... causes people in Africa to starve to death since they can't afford to pay twice as much for corn and other food?

(Farmers are cutting down forests to grow more crops to make ethanol. Cutting down trees is BAD for global warming.)

I do not support subsidies but I support ethanol and I think it is a vital, vital alternate energy ... McCain

Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Thursday defended his commitment to renewable energy such as ethanol production despite his law firm's work on behalf of major oil companies

We're using too much oil," Romney said. "We have an answer. We can use alternative sources of energy -- biodiesel, ethanol, nuclear power -- and we can ...

When it's $40 a barrel, it does make sense." About his June 2005 statement, McCain said: "I don't think I said that at $60 a barrel. I said it when it was $10 a barrel or $9 a barrel. But I think it has a profound influence when, when oil is as high as it is."

This is another Rush Limbaugh lie. Trees are not being cut down to grow corn. The trees are being cut down to make paper products. In most poor countries rice is the #1 food source. Corn is a tougher crop to grow in most parts of the world. Here is another crop fact hemp is easier to grow and uses 60% less water to grow but the cotton farmers pass laws to keep it from taking their market share of cnsumer products.
Now why would oil companies want ethanol to suceed? They don't because it will take away from their money making source. Don't believe the lies and think for yourself.

Bloody hell. This makes about as much sense as shooting yourself in the foot. We have plenty of corn. Lots and lots and lots. And lots. The Fed Gov buy overproduced corn at a inflated price to keep the market stable. Africans can't grow corn cause they will get shot or the field is mined.
Actually grasses are better producers of ethanol. So if we switch some corn growth to cane and tall grasses we could improve the amount of fuel produced and decrease the amount of excess corn in the market.
Hopefully we stay away from hydrogen. That's a big money pit if I ever saw one.
I think useable electric cars and hybrids will go a long way to solving our dependence on gasoline. They are working and improving them every day.
Death to the SUV!! Heh heh.

Corn is in everything it seems. In a decade, we should have alternative fuel sources. Right now we need corn to feed people and pets. Corn is in most dry pet food too. We don't need ethanol.
