This was classified as a hurricane, and hurricanes are given names. What was the name of the hurricane the press call "The Great Storm" which battered England 20 years ago?

It was actually a "European windstorm" that the UK gets hit with often, they can have winds just as strong as hurricanes and the one in 1987 is an example of this. The last one was january this year, when about 7 people died, and a 110mph gust was recorded on the south coast if i remember right.

It did not have a name, as it was not tropical in nature. It was a very powerful cyclone that had hurricane force winds, but since it did not meet the definition of a tropical cyclone, it was not named. Wind speed is but one of the required criteria for assigning a name to a low pressure system.

Probably not a cool name like the american ones like Katrina - more of a english name....like Burt

I don't think it had a name as such. I know that my grandad got killed by it though, i still think of him now.
