California fires! The media reports that some were set intentionally.

Years ago the term "fire bug" was part of our national lexicon. I just looked it up in the dictionary - or tried to. No listing. Back when, the word described an individual who set fires to satisfy their sexual cravings.

Though I didn't find a definition for "fire bug", I did come across the word "pyromaniac", which fit the definition for "fire bug".

My reason for posting this question, is to invite any users that have came in contact with, or has interacted in any way, with some one who suffers from this mental disorder, either in a clinical, progessional, or personal setting to share their experience(s).

Anyone?

A curious,

Wotan

I once met the 'Folkestone firebug.' He set fire to a hotel, after they sacked him. It wasn't for any sexual craving, just pure hatred for his dismissal, nasty, deliberate revenge. As for a mental disorder, he certainly didn't seem to have all his faculties, just kept laughing whenever any spoke of it. I've no idea what sentence he served for the offence, though I'm sure it would have been quite severe. If the California fires were set deliberately, it just goes to show that there are too many people out there with these mental disorders. We've had fires started deliberately over here and whilst working in Dover, I've seen youths deliberately setting fires on the Western Heights. The frightening thing about all this is that these people have no worries about who gets hurt.

From a prosecutorial aspect: A fire bug is the kid down the street who plays with matches. He's one to watch...Also see if he's killing neighbors cats or mutilating their dogs and blow him in to Social Services even if he's 5 years old.
An arsonist is someone who deliberately sets a building on fire for profit or other form of personal gain - this COULD include sexual gratification so don't joke about that.
If anyone is killed as a result of the arson - the arsonist then becomes a bloody murderer! This is the situation in California.
Often, when someone starts a "little" fire for "fun," they get out of hand and innocent people die - not to mention the loss of their homes and memories.

My Uncle was a firefighter killed in an arson fire set by a fellow firefighter, a guy from his own house! He was behind on his taxes so he had it burned down for the insurance.
No one pursued it back then (30 years ago) for political reasons. Uncle Donnie is still dead leaving a wife and 6 children.

I haven't actually met a pyromaniac, but we did have one a few blocks from my house. I live towards the outskirts of my town where there are a lot of fields. For about 3 months this guy kept going out to the fields and setting fires. I think he set 9 before they caught him, but he never burned down a structure. That's about the extent of my experience with this sort of thing.

Rena i can fairly say no i have not. I honestly have met a lot and far of folk and extremely few stand out as being an exact high quality of being, some were very diverse yet in a sturdy way, and some so smart i did not understand why they could worry with me, yet precise high quality no. until eventually you recommend my husband which he's high quality, yet precise.... i'm no longer effective.

I once met my boss's tenants. It seems that he rented his parents' fully furnished home, a really palatial Tudor-style mini-manse (5,500 sf and in Fox Chapel, PA) to them because they were waiting for their own home to be rebuilt. It had been burned. (Ahem.)

The 11 year old son kept running away from home. I met him one time when the entire family group stopped by our bank (my boss was the manager) to make a payment. The reason I remember him so well was because he was whispered about as the 'runaway.' He was a totally sweet, unremarkable towhead with angelic blue eyes.

Well, it took longer than expected to finish rebuilding the renters' home, and my boss's parents were pretty happy to continue staying in their Florida winter home while their Fox Chapel home, with a lifetime of memories and antiques keeping the renters comfortable.

To make a long story short, the 11 year old pyromaniac burned that house to the ground, just like he did his own home before it. Talk about upset--my boss went through the roof.

I know people who use fire in a sexual manner. It's not necessarily a disorder it's a form of foreplay.
