because your heart is on the left side of your body, and with the extra weight etc in late pregnancy, it puts less pressure on your heart (it hasn't got to work so hard to pump the blood around) and reduces the chance of high blood pressure.

This is a common question because we have all heard that it is best to sleep on our left sides. The reason is that the vena cava, a large vein which returns blood from the legs to the uterus, runs along the right side of the spine. Blood flow may be improved by staying off the back or lying on the left side.

wow, there are a lot of different answers here. My blood pressure measured a little high at my last apt. The dr had me lay on my left side for 10 and then tested again and it had gone down significantly. He said that laying on my left side took pressure off my kidneys and in turn my blood pressure didn't have to be so high to get adequate circulation.
I think that if your healthy you can lay down however your most comfortable. For me, my right side is much more comfortable because my ribs get really sore on my left. But because I know it affects my blood pressure I try to lay on my left for as long as I can anyway.

I know people with digestive difficulties are often told to lie on their left side because the canal leading from the stomach to the rest of the digestive tract is on the left side of the stomach. It makes the stomach's job easier if it's working with gravity instead of against it. This may or may not have anything to do with pregnancy, but the body is a whole unit and what affects one part affects the whole. Having things made easier on your stomach may make things more comfortable for you in general.

Because for some reason it is easier for the baby to breathe. When I was induced and laying there asleep wating in the hospital I woke up because I could hear my son's heart beat slow way down and the nurse told me to lay on my left side and I did and his heart beat went backup. That scared the living daylights out of me.

Aside from the obvious reasons laying on your left side keeps things moving keeping you comfortable. You don't want gas bubbles or anything like that to get stuck causing you and the baby discomfort. Honestly, there is another reason but I can't think of it right now. So, i'm not much help.

Rubbish. You can lay anyway you want even on your back. Women labor on their backs most of the time in the delivery room and everything usually turns out fine. Otherwise, we should all be laboring while laying on our lefts.

It has something to do with a nerve or vein that gets enlarged when you are pregnant I think? Its actually painful to lay on that side and Ive heard can cut off oxygen in the blood that your baby needs.
