does it matter whether or not i connect my modem to the basement incoming line or a wall outlet on the second floor? will the strength be stronger in basement?

yeah i have a wireless router and stuff i'm just trying to boost speed because when i directly connect my laptop/360 (via ethernet not wireless) the internet is 50% faster and also want to move it upstairs so that i can play on xbox live in hd hence i want to move the modem and router from basement to upstairs so i just want to know if its going to distort connection strength or not
