Why not have a designated runner for those who arent very fast? (Not a pinch runner)
Why not designated fielders for the players who cant hit very well? (Not a defensive substitution in the 9th inning)
Why dont they have designated throwers, some OF have bad arms.

OR why dont we make baseball players play Baseball?

Some of you dont get it.

A desginated runner would be a person who jsut ran all the time the ENTIRE game. Not a Pinch runner like I said.

I couldn't agree with you more. I don't understand how the AL can justify this crap.

"I'm only good at half the game." "That's okay - you can go to the American League!"

Herb Washington and Allen Lewis were 'designated runners' for Oakland in the early 70's. Washington never batted, but Lewis got 6 hits in his career. His line looks strange, 156 games, 29 at bats, 47 runs scored. He even managed to hit a HR.

It's not an official position, but in the 70's the A's did have a guy they called their designated runner. He didn't bat or field, he just pinch ran. I think his name was Herb Washington.

There was a time when there were unofficial designated runners. When the Babe hit HRs in his later years, guys like Jimmy Reece would run the bases; then the next half-inning, the Babe would take his position in the field.

Better yet, how about we let them change "on the fly" like in hockey? Let the extra outfielders be out in center field, and let them run on to the field. or, if it looks like there's going to be a close play at the plate, let some really huge guy run out to take the throw. Imagine the possibilities!

Part Hockey, Part Tag-team Wrestling, Part Baton-relay racing. A Chinese fire drill on offense and defense with players flying in and out all over the place driving the announcers, umpires and fathers teaching their kids how to keep score absolutely bonkers!

I LOVE IT!!!!

we dont have any of those just letting you know. the only reason the american league has the DH is because they do not want the pitchers getting hurt. Its not that they can't hit, but if your playing a team who plays beanball, and one of their players gets hit, what do you think the other side will do? retaliate, and they cant have that. its too risky, someone could get killed. Also ill have you know that josh beckett is a VERY good hitter along with some other pitchers, so its not that they cant hit, its a precautionary thing.

I think the DH is great it extends the careers of some of the games great players,it also makes for a more exciting game having an extra slugger to make the game more offensive oriented.

Wow, are you the ghosts of Charlie O. Finley and Bill Veeck, or something?
