I've seen them from here in Wyoming, typically a few times a year. Very beautiful. They are the result of high energy solar radiation interacting with nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the upper atmosphere, causing those atoms to glow. The Earth's magnetic field tends to deflect that incoming radiation toward polar regions, which is why the northern (and southern) lights are normally seen in those areas.

I live on the 45th parallel and I've seen them many times. Eeriely beautiful, they are curtains of light that shimmer and shift in the solar winds. I've seen them red, green, white, and occassionally a purplish-blue although this is quite rare. Its definitly worth watching for. You can contact a local astronomy club and get put on their notification list and they will call you when the lights are out.

I have, its quite a pretty thing to see. As far as I know they're caused by solar flares from the sun that cause electromagnetic reactions which appear as greens, blues, purples in the northern night sky. They usually appear in the winter but you can see them at other times and you'll have to be pretty northernly, the higher the more vibrant and colorful they'll be and you have to be away from city lights etc.
