There are many differences between birth control, choosing just not to have sex, and abortion. First, let me clarify that religion has nothing to do with my answer. I am going to base all of my information on facts. Birth control is taken to prevent pregnancy. This is done by keeping the woman's ovaries from releasing eggs that could be fertilized
Preventing fertilized egg from attaching to the lining of the uterus - intrauterine devices (IUDs) work this way. By using birth control you stop pregnancy before it happens. If you just choose not to have sex and wait till you get married there is no chance for a woman to get pregnant obviously. Now, abortion is very different. Did you know that a physician can detect a baby's heartbeat as early as 8 weeks into a pregnancy? A high percentage of woman that choose abortion today don't catch that they are pregnant until after 14 weeks. After this time if the mother still chooses to have an abortion they perform a procedure called vacuum aspiration. Basically what they do is take a vacuum and suck everything out of the uterus. The main difference in abortion is that the baby is an actual living thing inside a mother when they decide to get rid of it. It may not look like a baby but it does have a heartbeat when mothers decide to kill their baby. With choosing to not have sex or go on birth control you stop pregnancy before it happens. Abortion is getting rid of a baby that has already started it's life cycle. That is the difference.

Birth control is different because a baby was never made. We were all embryos and eventually they will become people. Just because they're not considered humans yet doesn't mean they don't deserve life. To me abortion is the same as taking a knife and stabbing a newborn to death. I can understand if the woman's life is in danger or if the baby has a serious or life threatening birth defect but other than that abortion is just wrong.

I think trixie above hit it right on the head about the differences, but an intelligent person can still be against abortion because of their morals, or beliefs. For example most people regardless of religion believe that murder is wrong, and oppressing, molesting, or hurting innocent children is wrong. Obviously, a fetus is not a child, but a line has to be drawn. When does begin to have rights? Some draw it differently than others.
Think about some people think that a child gains the right to consent at age 18, but some think it should be 13, 16, 21, when your father dies etc., it all depends on your culture or whatever. There really is not one right answer.
I think pro-choice people should still be compassionate and not equate abortion to wearing a condom, there is a loss of life occurring. Even though its hard because of the oppressive, I want to rule your life pro-lifers.
For the record I am pro-choice.

Not Having Sex -
The most committed form of being pro-choice. Denying ones self the pleasures associated with the processess because of the reprocussions. The hardest of the three to maintain a committment with. Since pregnancy is a causal contingency, remove the cause and there will be no effect.
Birth Control -
A way to block the meeting of the sperm and the egg, either by preventing the free release of the sprem or by preventing the maturation and release of the egg. Methods include the rhythem method, prophylactics, and hormone blockers. Intercourse still occurs, but not conception.
Abortion -
Conception has occured. The woman decides that the fetus will not make her uterus its home and aborts it. Death is an unavoidable side-effect for the fetus because it cannot survive on its own.

I'm against abortion (though not pro-abortion legislation) because it should be *rare*. I guess I'm just one of those people who think people should talk at least a little bit before having sex, and definitely about their views on and methods of birth control.
Asking about the difference between abortion, birth control, and abourtion is like asking the difference between I-95, I-91, and the Merritt Parkway. They all lead to New Haven, CT, so what's the difference? Sometimes people just choose to take different routes to get to the same place.

The difference between abortion, birth control and abstinence are pretty big even though the results are the same. Birth control prevents pregancy in two methods, one is by preventing ovulation and the other is by preventing the uterus from forming a lining for a fertilized ovum to implant itself, so technically the latter methods could be considered abortive in nature. Abstinence guarantees no children, but is generally reserved for religious zealots and asexual people. Abortion, however, is an act of volition to destroy something which was made where there was once nothing.
Your question is analogous to whether or not a district attorney will press charges for a crime. I am not saying abortion is a crime. The law allows for gradations of crime based on mental state as well as intent. If a person jumps in front of a speeding car with the intent to kill himself, the law would not charge the driver with murder, and would have an extremely hard time of even coming up with vehicular manslaughter. The endproduct is the same, a person dead, but the intent between the two instances is completely different.
The issue, at least to me, beyond the religious implecations, is one of protection. As a species humanity is unique in creating laws. By and large, laws are meant to protect the weakest among us from the stronger or predatory of us. Who needs the most protection than those who cannot speak for themselves, which an unborn child would certainly seem to be.
My problem with abortion is not that it is murdering children (which, I might add I feel is what is happening when an abortion takes place) but on philosopical grounds. The strong should help the weak, the able-bodied should aid those unabled, the predators should be prevented from hurting their victims.
Also, I feel it is a matter of responsibility. It is an immutable law of nature that for every freedom we enjoy there is an equal amount of responsibility concomitant with it. We as a race, must take responsibility for our actions, or inactions, just as we must accept the consequences for those actions or inactions. If somebody chooses to jump off the Empire State Building, should he rail that gravity will most certainly turn him into a pancacke as soon as he hits the ground? Or, if one wants to stand on a railroad track why should he be surprised when he gets hit by a train? I am of the opinion that if one is responsible enough to be having sex (believe me when I say I am a big fan of sex, just ask my wife) then one should be responsible enough for preventing conception if one doesn't want to have children. There are so many other ways of preventing an unwanted pregnancy besides having an abortion that this should not be some woman's chosen method.
PS: We are ALL pro-choice, even those who would make abortion legally the equivalent of murder. It is just that some of us choose NOT to have an abortion.

For religious reasons. Just because someone has faith in something tey cannot see doesn't exclude them from being intelligent.
Abortion is the destruction of a living fetus, regardless of how simple or unknowing it may be.
Birth control is: A, preventative hormone therapy to discourage female egg production (pills, depo shot, patch, ring, IUD) B, Condom C, rythym method of tracking estrus and avoiding sexual contact during specific times
Not having sex is abstinance. It is highly unlikely and rarely practiced outside of religious circles.
The difference between all of the above is simple. Responsibility factor...with abstinance having the highest and abortion the lowest
Just a note...some women have experinced extreme complications with abortions and are never able to conceive again. It is VERY common for women who have had more than 2 abortions to miscarry due to scarring of the uterus from the d&c procedure. So, abortion as a form of birth control has some pretty risky side effects.

I agree that every adult should have the choice and I think abortion has its place. I don't however think that it is the same as birth control. An abortion in the UK can take place up to 24 weeks at which time, it has been proven that a child could live if the mother gave birth (with a fair bit of medical help) I think that it is a serious issue that has to be thought through very carefullyy and that its better to use birth control and be carefull than to land in the situation where you had to make that choice.

Those three things are NOT the same. Not having sex is just that. Not having sex. No chance for a life to be created. Birth Control is used to prevent a life to be created. Abortion is killing a life that has been created. Embryos are alive. It's alive once it's created. A heart is created. If grown adults become pregnant when they're not ready to, they should have prevented it. Abortion is not a birth control. I don't pass judgment. These are just the facts as I know them to be. I wasn't ready either, but wen humans face changes, we adapt.
