Vietnam was ruled by emperors: 1802-1820..Gia Long; 1820-1841..Minh Mang; 1841-1847..Thieu Tri; 1848-1883..Tu Duc; Ham Nghi..1884-1885; Dong Khanh..1885-1889 there was actually an emperor up until 1929 or around that time. however, under French rule, the role was a hollow one. the names given here are not their personal names, but the names used on coins, etc.. the 'reign name'.

The Vietnamese were the rulers of France, before the French (or Europeans) went over there.
As for the person who answered above, the French colonised IndoChina from 1887 - 1954.
Ho Chi Minh lived from 1890 - 1969.
Now, the question is: Who ruled Vietnam before 1887??
