it has been linked to an old Welsh word for garlic
another meaning of craven is cowardly or perfidious

not often used as a first name, it's normally a surname.

Jay's girl--that's ridiculous! why would you say such a thing?
*my* name has only recently been listed in any books or sites because it hasn't been popular until people started using it, and now it's becoming quite normal. and i've NEVER gone through any "misery" for not having the same name as 5 other people in my class!!

The boy's name Craven is of Old English origin. Place name used as surname.
Craven: One who begs for his life when conquered; from crave, a word used formerly by one vanquished in trial by battle, and yielding to the conqueror.
Craven is also the name of a place in Yorkshire, England.

Okay, so I've been on about 6 different name sites looking for the meaning of this name and none of the sites even list it. If you name your baby Craven, it means you don't love your child because of all the misery you are going to put that child through in school.

My last name is Craven, but I"m not of English descent. My surname comes from my father's side, of course, and I'm of German, Irish, and French descent on his side. (Unknown for my mother due to her being adopted) So I'm guessing it comes from Ireland (at least mine does). I don't know what it could mean, but I'm guessing it could be "garlic" based off of Ember's answer.
