I think there is a strong rural/city bias going with gun control issues. In the city, in poorer neighborhoods especially, there is a terrible war going on with many gun fatalities. Many people arguing for gun control may have lost friends or relatives to gun violence. On the other hand, rural people use guns all the time for hunting etc. They are not particularly associated with violence against others except in a cowboy type way (I got me my concealed carry permit!! Whoopeee! Then they never do anything about it). A lot of people really do fear absolute government control, don't underestimate that.
I want to add my own personal piece - the brady bill made it illegal for people who had been committed involuntarily to a mental institution to own a gun. This gives the idea that a person who has been committed is potentially violent, which is absolutely false. A lot of people have been committed because they had no insurance for outpatient treatment, and the state would only pay if it was called involuntary (even tho the patient did want the treatment). Also, many are committed because they have trouble making food and keeping up their apartment and may hide under the bed. Then they get treatment and are fine. There is no distinction between those folks and the few who choke their wife nearly to death, for example. There aren't any women shooters and they're in mental hospitals too. So there is an issue that your teacher never probably saw in an essay, and it's related to another very current topic in covering health care for mental illnesses (insurance parity, Paul Wellstone's bill that will probably pass congress and Bush said he would sign it) and how mental illnesses are stigmatized. I tell people about this because I am a gun owning female with bipolar disorder and it scare the bejesus out of me every time some horrible thing like VA Tech happens. The news never tells you how the professor who got killed, or the student who helpedsave others, have mental illness (not saying anyone at Va Tech did, but I was a UCLA TA before I got too sick to finish my Ph.D., and I would have protected my students as other profs and TA's did)

Well, some of the key issues are 2nd amendment rights, self defense, and security on the one side and mainly safety on the other side.
Gun safety, security within the home, accidental shootings, gun theft, concealed weapons permits, who can carry, when they can carry, where they can carry. These are all issues that enter into the debate.
I would highly recommend watching Bowling for Columbine. It's a Michael Moore documentary about America's obsession with guns and it used the Columbine massacre to frame the discussion. Moore does present a bias point of view and he skews his facts. But I do think he does a good job of touching on some of the key points in the debate.

Do a timeline essay of governments in history that prohibited guns and the corelation to facist regimes rising to power. Hitler was a big fan of gun control, he didn't want the Jews to defend themselves. So was Stalin.

Try the second amendment which is the only thing standing between AmeriKans and a government that wants to take all their rights away.
You could title your essay "I WOULD NEVER OWN A GUN... I WOULD CALL NINE ONE ONE... AND THEN I CAN BE DEAD, DEAD, DEAD."
