Is all of your media sources so gossipy?
My goodness, looking at various newspapers online, they seem to be as gossipy as the old hens at the beauty salon.

No wonder the McCann's are being beaten so badly.

We have newspapers like that here in the states (we call them tabloids) too but they are easily identifiable and people who do read them will never admit to it.

I've learned one thing from Maddy's story, never visit Portugal!
The laws are just crazy. Not being able to speak publically about accusations made about you! How insane!

I am glad I live in American where I can speak my mind and defend myself.

Portugal - I beg to differ. With all due respect I don't see your country as safe. a 4 year old snatched from her bed, a major media campaign to find her and 6 months later, not a clue as to whewre she is, what happened or who dun it.
I think I will stay here in America where, yes, I have the freedom of speech. I've never been arrested for opening my big mouth and voicing my opinions. And as you may have guessed, I do that alot.

Most of the tabloids are gossipy in the UK yes. I agree with you regards the policing in Portugal, I do like the Portuguese and their food though.
One thing that you Yanks have a better attitude than us Brits though is you actually admire achievement, we tend to bash people down once they've made it. I think we should be more positive about people doing well.
I love the peculiarities and eccentricities of the British though, all in all I'm quite proud to be British, especially a Mancunian

Yes. In UK legal advisers may tell you to say nothing but when charged the matter is Sub-judici (I think I've spelt it wrongly) and comment can not be made until either charges are dropped or after the trial. Comment may be made freely on the verdict and penalty after that. This is to give the accused a fair trial.

On the whole the system works not perfectly quite well.

I do not want to visit Portugal with children especially if things go wrong. The Police are proving to be a bunch of no marks looking for someone anyone to charge

Wanna talk about insane laws ? ... how about the pratiotic act in the US ? Are you sure you are free to speak up ?

Portugal is considered one of the safests countrys in the world ... maybe our laws aren't that insane , and maybe , just maybe , our police force isn't that incopetent as the british tabloids try to make them look

Don't you think that the people of the U.K. know the difference between publications like the SUN and NEWS of the WORLD, from papers like The Daily Telegraph and The Times?

Apparently you have not spent any length of time there, or you would know the difference. Reliable sources of british reporting are some of the most un-biased in the world. The BBC is the best source in the world for TV or Radio world news.

This is comming from an American who has spent alot of time there, and looks there for world news as the American world news is obviously liberal biased. (Just look at who owns the networks).

The Times, The Independant and the The Telegraph are probably the best of a bad bunch... the other tabloid rubbish is read by the large majority sadly, which is a bad reflection on Britain - but that's the sort of bloody mess my once great country has descended to.

Hello, don't worry most right minded people know these papers, they put anythiing in them to titlate and to sell
The Mcanns have a lot of support contrary to what anyone else says, and Portugal is a lovely country, beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say.
Most of what you read is speculation, and at times making fun of others.
Nice to have you as a contact, I have a cousin in Vegas and an aunt and her family in Florida. You have a lovely country.

Lucky you, and lucky me for being British. At the end of the day, the McCanns are hated and villified for good reason in this country. For a start, have you ever heard them admit that by leaving children alone, that this is the root course?..no neither have i.

You say that they cannot answer back either..Funny that because they have hired a Pr company in Portugal and a Pr man, Clarence Mitchell over here. There story has consistently changed, or things are suddenly remembered after several months.

People believe that many of us hate them because they have money, but this is not the case. People in Britain want, no will demand justice for this little girl, and that is why many on here write what we write because we dont want to see a cover up.

I hope in the USA that child neglect would be investigated, and thought that our country did the same, but how wrong i was.

Never having lived in the States I cannot comment on where you live. I have visited Portugal twice. The Portuguese are very nice people. Is it not rather sad that we are so good at crime detection methods because we have so many serious crimes and criminals that we have developed these techniques, the Portuguese are more innocent. The McCann's are very clever people. I suggest if you have a chance to watch that interview again, watch HIM very, very carefully.

The vast majority of Brits speak the same language, pretty much watch the same tv shows, have a very long history, have a shared culture and regional rivalry that binds us together. Gossiping can and does happen as the average Jo Brit does not a carry gun and is not afraid to voice their opinion for fear of being shot...
