It seems that a few members of the GOP are upset because they’ll miss a vote because they indend on hanging on Bush’s coattails during his visit to the fire ravaged Claifornia on Thursday.

Perhaps if they’d stay and do their job - as aposed to taging along with Bush to play show & tell, they’d be able to vote.

Why can’t our elected officials just do the job we’ve hired them to do without playing the same ol’ political games???

They must feel like they're being punished if they have to stay behind to do classwork and don't get to go on the field trip with the rest of the class.

How long have the fires been going on? Certainly the congressmen and women who would miss the vote would have another opportunity to visit the area damaged by the wildfires. Stay and vote, just leave for Cali after your vote. Oh... but that would likely mean fewer television cameras when you arrive.

Bill H you have a valid point, but I wonder how many of the 13 represent a distric which has been affected by the wild fires. Maybe 1 or 2. And why have they waited this long to visit the area devestated by this tragedy? Couldn't they schedule there California news conferences another day, any other day.

I would like to see the Democrats hold this bill off until next week for a couple of reasons. First of all it would show America that democrats are workign in the best interest of all Americans and have so much faith in there revised SCHIP bill that they welcome debate or opposition from republicans. It would also show that the democrats are willing to work on a bipartisan basis to solve a common problem.

Eh-- Why should the GOP have to choose between two important things like this? The DNC is campaigning that Bush hates children. And the CA fires is an example of the way things should get done. I think the GOP has earned a piece of that applause.

I think it is a problem with all elected officials in washington. they get like 10 weeks vacation a year and then all the time off doing dog and pony shows. It is amazing they get anything done at all.

I agree with the idea its a field trip. I can get much of my business done with a cell phone. The photo op stuff is childish.

The representatives that are going to California with Bush are from California, and as they are reps of that state, it is there job to see how their constituents are doing and how they are being treated.

Give em a shovel and a hose to fight the fire, that would be more than they've given the country while in Washington.

They should be sent to jump out of helicopters with buckets of water right over the heaviest fires.
