I want to buy a microphone, for recording vocals and guitar ... I am looking at one on Amazon, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-ECM-MS907-Stereo-Digital-Microphone/dp/tech-data/B00005QBUW/ref=de_a_smtd/202-0930509-8226212
It says it is suitable for recording to portable audio systems, but I just want to check if anyone knows whether it will work with my laptop, using software like Audacity.
Can anyone help please?

It should work OK, the signal may be a bit weak, but that's normal when you use a non-USB mic with a PC.
The important point is that the mic is a condenser mic which will be ideal for vocals and guitar.
I have a step-by-step online guide for exactly what you want to do here:

(follow the link to 'multi-track recording)
and more about mic's (and why you should use a condenser) here:

If you want another suggestion for a possible recording mic follow the links to the 'USB condenser'
hope this helps...

if you can get a trusted make and get the best you can afford dont take short cuts because its your art that your recording remember and that it comes from your soul and you cant put a price on that sm is usually the best for gigs but for laptops i dont know i wish you the best of luck with your musical projects and keep the music alive

Connector Type: 1 x microphone ( mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm )
It should work, but, I hate to make a promise on it.

Yes. It uses a 3.5mm jack so it will fit into your laptop
