Acorns burn well in outdoor fires. We used to have over twenty oak trees in our old yard and tons of acorns. We swept them off the driveway to keep for the squirrels to dish out to them in the winter. We never had a problem with squirrels getting in the garage. The acorns we didn't keep we burned with the oak leaves. I've never seen them "explode" but inside, I'm not sure I'd take the chance if others say they do.

I would be most concerned about creosote build up in the chimney. Wood is supposed to be dried before it is burned so that it doesn't cause the build up. I would wonder if the acorns would cause this as well.

Call a local chimney sweep and have them check your chimney out and ask them about the acorns.

They will POP

When they do they can jump out of the fireplace and start a fire.

Leaving them for squirrels invites them into your home - garage.

I'd say rake them up - put in a garbage bag - and let the trash man have them.

Or donate them to a hunter for deer food

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/tPjir
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

I wouldn't suggest doing that, but you are welcome to try. The air pockets in them tend to make the acorns pop back at you if you burn them. If you really want them gone, I'd recommend raking them into a garbage bag and disposing of them.

They are not toxic however they have to be shelled, cracked and ground into coarse meal. Then they have to be rinsed for a long time to leech the tannins out. The indians put them in baskets in creeks and let the creek do the work. You might use it in recipes for a corn bread type recipe, mush or even a soup

They do not burn real well and they pop. You may have a burn in your rug. If you had a corn / cherry pit furnace maybe you might use them as fuel.
