All social programs to help the lazy unfortunate were cut and we concentrated on what was really important? Protecting our citizens from threats here and abroad?

Not all social programs. Just egregious ones that continue to support people who do not contribute to society or their own well being

Oh, no .... you should find out the statistics for how many of the "lazy unfortunates" there are ....and then you will find out that if we cut out the programs to help them, we would then have a threat at home.... in addition, we are just having wildfires which have so far moved 500,000 people from their homes, making them homeless and in need of assistance, and in the southeastern states there is drought .... hey, that will require gov't assistance ...goodness knows what else is going on ... and sometimes, the unfortunate are really not lazy, just unable to help themselves, or the victims of natural disasters (flood, fire ..)..and not everyone is bright and a part of the work force (able to support themselves) ...

I do understand where you are coming from, and I wish we did have a nation of people who can care for themselves....but we do not ... t'was ever thus ... "the poor we will always have with us" ...

Sure. If you want the people to rob and steal and kill now for their $50 rent every month instead of paying them through the Gov't.

If we were protected there wouldn't be new attempted terrorist attacks on our soil every year. Take a look at the $1 Trillion we are spending in Iraq. Compare that to the fraction of that for what we spend on social programs that help millions of Americans.

You must be a Republican to choose spending money in Iraq over spending it on our own citizens.

so a person that's unfortunate is lazy, and a person that is lazy is unfortunate? i think that's junk logic friend.

people capable of work but too lazy to do so deserve nothing. those that lose their jobs, get laid off, become disabled, or have any other genuine reason for temporary or permanent assistance need all the help the community can afford them. illegals should be barred by law from any government, state, or local assistance of any kind.

i think you will find that the vast majority of citizens that use various social services in fact need and deserve them.

Look back in our country's history 70 years.

You aren't discussing a new idea. It's easy to see how things worked in America and it's easy to see how things work in other parts of the world where there are no "social safety nets".

Of course not. We have an obligation to help the unfortunate. Not the lazy, they can get off their vss and get to work. We should make welfare and government aid as hard to get as a building permit at least. If we just cut out the fraud, waste and abuse in government run programs there would be more than enough money to help the truly needy and have improved National Security.

Look up the following:

False dichotomy
False dilemma
False choice
Fallacy of the excluded middle
Bifurcation

They're all fairly synonymous, and will underline what's wrong with this idea.
