We were members for years (used to be called "united consumer's club"). We bought a lot of furniture and other stuff from them. I don't have the receipts to back it up, but I feel like we got our money's worth over the period of time that we were members.
The question you have to ask yourself is whether or not you will be making a lot of purchases of the kinds of things they have over the span of the membership. When we joined, we were newlyweds and didn't have much. Now, two kids and 20 years later, almost every piece of furniture I own was bought through Direct Buy.
The reason we are no longer members is because we failed to pay our "membership extension" fee on time. They were not very forgiving of our error.

I don't have 3 to $4000 dollars to try it. I have not seen any good comments about them. Mostly complaints about paying delivery charges and no help when items arrive damaged. They are merely a "middleman" for manufacturers. Think about it. You are not "buying direct" if you need to pay them for the service.
