if you are caught driving under the influence what are the consequences...best/worst case scenario? also, it will probably go on your permanent record so what would that mean in the future(declined jobs, higher insurance, etc.)? thanks! (this is for the state of illinois or could be in general)

Unfortunately, from experience I can tell you it's a big financial hit beyond bail ($2000) and court costs. I had to pay for a psych evaluation to see if I'm an alcoholic (I'm not), a night in jail, once every other week probation meetings, license was suspended for 2 months, random drug and alcohol testing when I went to probation meetings, MADD class and my car insurance more than trippled (it's now a 'lower' $200 per month). I live in California and it stays on your record 10 years here.
I also had to go to 8 AA meetings in a 2 month time period. Most people are sentenced to 4 AA meetings a month for their entire probation.
I also lost my job because the company did not allow any kind of law infraction. Because of the work I do I have to have background checks and my DUI always comes up.
It was a very expensive lesson to learn and the punishment certainly made me get my act together.

Most states have a minimum jail sentence (around 3 days). Your insurance will go higher. many employers do not ask for traffic offenses to be listed on applications (unless it is a driving job) that are misdemeanors.

Jail! As for the permanent driving record after x number of years I think it goes away.
