I posted a question here about this once before. But now I have what the codes were for the light and why it is still sputtering. Auto Zone said the codes were- 1- #4 cylender misfire (I had the plugs & plug wired changed) could that be just a bad plug or wire that may have been bad when they were bought? 2- A clutch torque? Something about preventing my car from going into overdrive properly and that it affects my proffiency.

First the misfire code-Nissan has a service bulletin out the, if the EGR passages in the intake clog up(a real common problem on ALL cars), then that code can set. And yes, its misfiring, and yes, its affecting fuel mileage.
Now for the trans code-its slipping inside the transmission, but could also be a speed sensor and not a mechanical problem. If its for the clutch that controls the overdrive, yes, its causing a fuel mileage drop. Find a reputable shop that has certified techs.

I guess most of the people here don't remember how bad a 2001 Altima looks. That series was the worst looking of the three serires of Altimas . 2001 Corollas aren't that attractive either but they are cheaper to repair and operate. In it's defense, the Altima does have a 20 more hosepower but the engine is a lot bigger and the car weighs quite a bit more. Stick with the Corolla. It'll even be worth more in the long run.

Did they check the ignition coils?
Although I haven't heard much problems with Altima ignition coils they were a big problem with 2000 -2001 Maximas.
May be something to check.

Also make sure the overdrive switch is engaged. It's usually somewhere around the shifter. When it's off there will be an indicator light on the dash.

If I owned your car and had your problems, I'd keep driving until they got so bad that any shop could fix them.
