I'm in the process of buying a 150 gallon fish tank fairly cheap. My plan is to raise minnows from our creek to see what they grown into for fun. This size of tank is new to me and I need to determine what size filters and pumps I will need. Can anyone give me advice on this? Like I said, this is all new to me so any advice you can give is appreciated. Thanks!

Here are a few that would work for you. Or you can use 2 smaller filters. also an under the gravel filtration system will work along with one of those.
Good luck

You will need a filter that "turns over" the tank volume at least 3 times an hour. This will be a cold tank, I assume, so if it's located in a warm area you might need a chiller. Lighting could be just about anything. The sizes of the filters and pumps depend on how you use them,a lot of little ones will work just as well as one or two large ones.
Since your fish will come from flowing water a current from one end of the tank to the other would be beneficial. Also of benefit might be extra aeration. Stream water usually has a high O2 content.
Sometime minnows are just minnows,in other words, they might just grow up to be larger minnows. Since I don't know the area of the country(or World) in which you live,it would be hard to guess what sort of fish you might catch. If you are in the U.S. there is a chance that you might find some Darters, these are quite colorful little fish that you may find very attractive.

Has the tank been cycled yet? Have you been doing 20-30% water changes every week? And by water changes it means you have to siphon the gravel to get all the waste out of there. What color is the cloudy water? If it is green, then you could have an algae bloom. Try to feed the fish less and watch your lighting, you should only have the lights on at most 12 hours and that is if you have plants in there. If it is white/grey, then it could be a bacteria bloom. This will go away after time, I had one for about a week and a half and then one day I came home and it clear again. What are your parameters? Nitrite, Nitrate, kH, gH, pH and ammonia levels.

if your geting a tank that size your going to need a good filter I think a Hagen Fluval FX5 http://www.aquatichouse.com/FILTRATION%20MENU_files/Fluval.asp
will be more than enuff filter for your needs.
I would like to tell you that taking minnows from your creek and puting them in a tank like that is a wast of what could be a very nice show tank.

just so you know jen is wrong you would have to have 2 of the Emperor 400 they each do 80gal and the Emperor 280 is to small it will not fit on the lip of a 150gal tank.
thats one thing your going to have to watch some of the hang on back filters will not fit on the lip of a large tank there just not made for anything that big .
think about cichlids easy to care for and and in a tank that size you could have a very nice group.

I would use two Penquin 370 with the bio-wheels.I would also use a powerhead on one end of the tank to create a good current through the tank.
