Ah, the loneliness of the long distance runner question.
Being a winner has more ups than downs, and all winners know that. It is an exclusive club to which few belong and membership is rarely achieved.
If it is lonely, then why do so many wish to stay?

When someone wins there are lots of envious guys ready to spoil his/her victory. loneliness is just an outcome of their mean feeling, one of the possible arms they use to destroy the Winner, in my opinion.
Luckily the Winners do not care about mean guys and go on on their path, straight and humbly (winners, true winners, usually are not boastful persons).

If the winner takes loneliness, it is only due to jealousy.

How far can you go? Normally your ambitions need to be kept in check rather than encouraged. You tend to assume that anything is possible just as long as you try hard enough. Yet for some reason now, you lack your usual confidence. Either you doubt yourself or you doubt your circumstances. One way or another, you fear failure - and, thus, you feel inclined to contemplate a compromise. Do you really need to sell yourself so short? Absolutely not. Soon you will see why.
