what risks are assioated with coal mining and what makes it so dangerous? is the pay good or is it not worth it?

Coal is brittle and not very strong, it therefore has a tendency to collapse on you.
Coal seams are often permeated with noxious or flammable gases which can asphyxiate or barbecue the miners.

The coal when inhaled into the lungs can cause a common coal miners problem which is black lung. The pay is extremely good but sadly cannot pay for a new lung. Studies have shown that 7 out of 31 miners obtained the black lung while working for an avg of three and a half years in a mine

Mines are not kept up to code a lot of the time to increase profit margins. Also, Earth is unpredictable. We can't control her. There is always some danger involved when trying to "tame" the planet. As for the pay being worth it? You might want to talk to some real miners and get their opinions.
