$2000 and educational discounted hardware can probably get you about 4-6 decent desktops for general office type usage. I spent $499 per Lenova desktop (included 19" LCD) at Sam's Club and it is fine for general usage and most gaming so you don't need a really high end system in most cases.

Now without a bit more info on the class type/subject, we can't really say if the general use system will work for you and we can't make a suggestion on the type of software to get. I'm sure you can also get educational discounts on software too, in fact your school system may already have site licenses to most of what you would want.

Dell would allow discounts for like schools and big business. I would recommend getting the small desktops and they usually cost like 200 bucks and come preloaded with software. For the software I would say get what you need (Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Works, and Microsoft Encarta) These are the most helpful software when I was in school. When kids have other programs at home and they need to open it, they will at least have the programs to open up what they got.
