Think as a new starter - it is unfortunately almost an essential thing to have. I found it very hard a long time ago to get into IT as I don't have a degree. Now it's not a problem - but thats more down to 19 years experience.

Depends on the employer. Many will require it just because it is the "expected" thing for IT workers. In reality though, a curiosity of how things work and access to technology at a young age and some core IT training at a technical program can lead to a qualified engineer too. Unfortunately you will be trying to get into an industry that pushes college degrees as a requirement for many employers. Getting a job without a degree is certainly possible, but just a bit more difficult.

You have to be a master at what you do.

Neither the certification (which dies in 3 years) or any college certification or degree can guarantee that 100%.

The college degree just guarantees that you are not a total test-beating flaming idiot.

To get the real job, you should love what you do, do it all the time, and do it whether or not you are being paid for it.

To the right company who understands a college degree is just a piece of paper, you don't have to have a degree. However, a lot of the companies I have seen these days are now looking for the certifications and the degree! So, for the right company, you may just be able to use the certification, but for many now, they want both or will refuse to promote you without the degree.
