While your question is interesting, the reading of the replies sees me outraged at the monumental ignorance and moral and intellectual bankrupcy of what I can only assume are conservative/right wing idiots.of many of the posters .
These fools and make no mistake they are ignorant fools ,are inanely comparing the current California disaster to that of Katrina.
The disaster in California is effecting ESSENTIALLY suburbs and private homes.Virtually the entire state's and local infra-structures like police and police stations, offices, businesses etc etc etc are essentially un-affected. While there are certainly dislocations, the communities and their infrastructures and services are relatively un-affected PERIOD.
There is absolutely no problem whatsoever with food/medical supplies and services to the general population from the police to garbage collection and a hundred other services.
There are so far VERY FEW deaths (three that I have heard of ).
Unlike in New Orleans, there are no abanndonned stores where LOOTERS can do their thing and if you friggin RACISTS think that there would not be even if the stores were abandonned I suggest you look back at many other examples of riots in California where some BLACK AND WHITE Californians looted stores en masse .
Katrina on the other hand DESTROYED VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING from people to businesses to the entire infrastructure .There were NO SERVICES WHATSOEVER .There was effectrively NO police ,NO FOOD ,NO MEDICAL SUPPLIES .Bodies were floating around for days .
To you disgusting racist that rant on about how responsible the Californians are in dealing with their situation and how totally irresponsible the Louisiannans were to their disaster you seem to have forgotten the FRIGGIN MAGNITUDE OF THE KATRINA SITUATION !!!!!!
Do to the very RELATIVELY isolated nature of the California disaster, local and state officials in California are NOT trying to manage in a TOTALLY DEVISTATED SITUATION like they were in New Orleans with NOTHING WORKING .
While no doubt the Katrina atrocity smatened up FEMA and has made their responses more timely and effective ,make NO BLOODY mistake whatsoever but that RACISM was involved in the SLOW Katrina response PERIOD.
Literally tens of thousands of humans were trying to stay alive in a vast sea of filth and destruction with NO BLOODY SERVICES OR HELP FOR FRIGGIN DAYS AND DAYS !!!! HUMANS were stranded on roof tops for days with NOI ffod or water and absolutely no indications of HELP BEING ON IT'S WAY.
Do YOU not remember the friggin images of Katrina?? Where the friggin hell were you conservative RACISTS.
What friggin idiot would be so morally and intellectually bankrupt to then draw RACIST conclusions that have been drawn on the board .
You simply make me sick !!!!

California is suffering a very different form of disaster than that which happened along the Gulf Coast. One major difference is that communication and supply lines are not nearly as hampered as they were during two hurricanes. In some ways, the problems in California are worse, such as the need to evacuate form shelters when the fires move on. There is nothing particularly more caring in the Federak response. In fact, the federal response is not particularly faster or bigger in this case. The state of California was better prepared and responded faster and more efficiently than the state of Louisiana.

In a way the "victims" in New Orleans are victims of their own stupidity by electing "leaders" who had no foresight with regards to potential disasters such as Katrina. Back in the 90's federal money was given to upgrade the levee's which were instead spent on casinos. When Katrina did hit the first responders (State and Local) were slow to respond. FEMA is not a first responder. FEMA's job is to supply funds and resources AFTER the first responders have stabilized the situation. Katrina-affected states Mississippi and Alabama's first responders understood their job and survived with minimum casualties and have since recovered from damage caused by Katrina. Comparing first responders - Governor Blanco to Governor Schwartzennegger and you have an answer why the situation in California is under control and why New Orleans is still a disaster waiting for the next disaster to happen.

It has nothing to do with the pres. Each state is independent, the federal government cannot step in unless asked to do so by the state. The federal government was not invited to help with New Orleans therefore could do nothing but fly over it.
Since it didn't go so well, everybody blamed the president and the media did not educate the public as to the real reason why Bush didn't help. He simply could not!
A lot of people, including yourself, were influenced and angered by whoever is controlling and censoring the media. They do a really good job of it.
I'm not a Bush fan, but it is really scary how the media manipulates our country and make people believe whatever they spew. And why shouldn't we, our media is supposed to be on top of things. You know, freedom of the press. Guess what, it's not so free.

Let's remember that many of the "victims" of Katrina had plenty of warning, and simply refused to evacuate. Residents of New Orleans were also the ones who looted their own city.
Sorry - my crying towel is at the cleaners.
And now the government is going to make loans and aid available to the people who were burned out WHO DIDN'T HAVE INSURANCE!!! How can you have a home without insurance?
I am sympathetic to people who are in the line of natural disasters - or as seems to be the case, arson. But people who don't take basic precautions to protect themselves and their property, who refuse to evacuate - my sympathy level drops.
I do not believe government is responsible for making up for our stupidity or lack of action.

Bush visited New Orleans also.
Bush also allocated money for New Orleans and residents (which via the news most was spent on junk and fraud)
Hurricanes and wildfires are fairly slow moving and people in both instances were told to leave ahead of time. San Deigo people left, New Orleans people didn't.
The only difference between the two are the different states and that one was a hurricane and one is fires.
Both are catastraphic.
Now, there are mansions in New Orleans just like in San Diego.
We aren't seeing the looting or the "we want a handout" from people in San Diego because unlike New Orleans residents they have insurance and the right kind of insurance. There are wildfires, most residents there have insurance to cover that. The people in New Orleans live in a soup bowl and they know it, but they didnt get that insurance.
Unlike New Orleans the mayor and gov were prepared and have done a great job running things. Nagel in New Orleans was a joke. He didnt eveacuate until the last minute.
Unlike in New Orleans the residents and neighbors in San Diego are helping people who have lost everything or are evicted.
This has nothing to do with Bush, FEMA or anyone else. This is about the people helping people. Which clearly didn't happen much in New Orleans.

My, my! The chimp doesn't care much about any domestic issue .... unless it means big political gains for him/republicans. Arnold is a big "R" so he may have gotten federal help long before Katrina victims would have. How can you say the chimp is a leader? He is less than the dirt on the sole of my shoe and he should be prosecuted for every crime in the book including treason and first degree murder!

FEMA does seem to be doing a better job. Lessons learned from the past seem to be paying off. Remember too, those areas that are on fire are prediominately Repbulican voting precincts. So it stands to reason he would want to make sure they are well served. Also this is California not Louisiana. The state is bigger with better resources and a governor who wants to make sure those middle class and rich Republican areas are well coddled.

That's because the State and local authorities responded like they're suppose to. People listened and evacuated. In N.O. they stayed, and then waited for the Federal government.
Did you see everyone volunteering and taking care of each other? Do you recall the violence and looting in N.O.? How was that the government's fault? People stealing sporting Goods and jewelry to survive?
EVERY SINGLE answer that mentions personal responsibility received substantial thumbs down. How old are the liberals on here? Do they have any life experience, or do they simply listen to their government funded Liberal professors? (of course, they never question the fact that many teachers are making a living off the government).

How vile!!! How do you live with this hate inside? Look into your civics book. Response to a natural disaster is first a local, then a state and FINALLY a federal responsibility. Perhaps this is why Blanco lost her job in Louisiana. The response in San Diego is an example of what happens when the appropriate people actually do their job. It is also an example of what happens when the people affected take some responsibility for their lives and possessions and don't wait to see who is going to take care of them.
