A machine image - when there is gunk in the gears, things don't move smoothly. So when someone does something that fouls up an idea - whether mechanical or not - they are said to "Gum up the works"

To gum up the works means that you are complicating the process. It is like pouring sticky syrup into a bunch of gears. The gears will not turn effectively if there is something causing them to slow down.
