Here is one way to explain a mathematical expression:

A mathematical expression is a sequence of symbols which can be evaluated. For example, if the symbols represent numbers, the expressions are evaluated according to a conventional order of operations which provides for calculation, if possible, of any expressions within parentheses, followed by any exponents and roots, then multiplications and divisions and finally any additions or subtractions, all done from left to right.

An expression is a relation between two things, an equation is a perfect example of an expression which shows one variable with respect to another:
y = x, so it says here that some variable y is equal to another variable x. An expression can also be a non direct relationship like:
y ~ 1/x, which shows that y is proportional to the inverse of x, and this relation is not absolute but it provides information, so it is an expression.

Something like "3x", "5y+4", or x² is a mathematical expression. If there's an equals sign it's an equation, e.g., "y=7m-9".

a mathematical expression is using numbers to summarize a problem, a formula/equation...etc., instead of words....^_^
