What is a good get-your-wiggles-out but indoor-appropriate game to start our Brownie meeting with? Our meeting is right after school so the girls are restless. Unfortunately it is rainy so we can't go outside like I planned. So what is a good, relatively quiet but active game to get-the-wiggles-out so that we can settle down for an indoor meeting?

BTW - they are 1st graders.

This may be more active than you want, but I label two sides of the room "A" and "B"

Then I ask "getting to know you" questions like:

1. If you have a pet, go to A, no pet, go to B
2. If you are wearing white shoes, go to B, all other colors go to A
and anything else I can think of. It is a good icebreaker, too. (I used this all the way through about 4th or 5th grade).

Look at the games in "Playing Around the World," too. We did these as anti-wiggle times.

Also, singing a song with hand gestures, like "Girl Scouts are so High Minded" or "There's Something in My Pocket" can get them in the mood.

Have you tried the MacScouter webpages? It is primarily for Cub and Boy Scouts, but girls also enjoy the games.

You could spend about 10-15 minutes in exercises, stretches - toe touches, jumping jacks, sit-ups. Explain the benefits of stretching before doing any type of sport or other more strenuous exercise (jogging, power walking) and take the time to discuss drinking plenty of fluids while exercising and eating right (plenty of fruits and vegetables) and tell them they can discuss these things with their families and encourage their family to be healthy - even 10-15 minutes of exercise is better than none. Good luck and God Bless.
