Not that the British working man got anything out of the Empire, but at least it was upfront, rather than this Mega-corporation private army stuff like Blackwater and Halliburton.

I don't know.... let's ask the people of India.

I see the point you are trying to make but you are comparing apples to oranges. It was a different world then and prejudices did not have to be hidden when the British were the most powerful nation in the world. They even had scientists and scholarly institutions that "scientifically proved" that the English man was superior in intellect. I don't know what is worst but I don't feel like slapping the Victorian Empire on the back because of America's conduct in the world today.

The US doesn't have what would be called a classic empire. We don't run around the world planting our flag and taking over territory. Instead we help poor nations have a better life through trade and cooperation. So yes let's continue to expand on that program. You must have slept through your history class. The British working man received massive benefits from the empire, the highest standard of living of any working class on earth, just for starters.

I seem to remember from my history classes that the British hired Hessian mercenaries to fight us in the revolutionary war.

No. The world has no one to blame but the British Empire for the mess in America. They were the ones who populated this country with their rejects and religious zealots. I mean really! Who populates a country with people who wear belt buckles on their heads and expects things to turn out well!

No. The British Empire was oppressive and exploitive.

America is NOT an empire. Any nation America conquers in war, gets rebuilt and handed its freedom and autonomy back.

Just look at Germany and Japan as examples.
