bumblemancan, not really. What is proven is that the Leafs have always been the team that was broadcast in more places and therefore had the higher ratings by default simply because people wanted to watch hockey.

If you look at the eastern and western edges of the country however (basically, anything outside of Ontario...) you'll find that the predominant team is the Montreal Canadiens however seeing as most networks are run from Toronto, it's only natural they would concentrate on the Leafs.

It's been voiced high enough in all parts of the country that people want more variety but the Toronto-centric Canadian media can't hear it above the din caused by the Leafs.

I'd like to turn this around. Why do people who've never left their neck of the woods to go to the country's largest city spend so much time complaining about it? It's hard to fathom why the city has such a huge influence until you try to drive across the Greater Toronto area. It's freaking HUGE! And every other person is a hockey fan. You can drive nearly 200 miles and not leave the urban area starting in Grimsby and going to Oshawa. When you include Halton, Hamilton-Wentworth, Peel, York and Durham regions in with Toronto you get a population of over 7.5 million people. And a good 60% of them are hockey fans. And I can say from my extensive travels in this country that I have found Leaf fans everywhere I have gone from one coast to the other. I can understand not liking the attitude many folks in the Toronto area have (I grew up in a small town in Ontario) because it bothers me and I have to live with it every day but, to begrudge them things without truly having a perspective on why things are done as they are simply out of ingnorance is petty.

Commenting on the Leafs proves you are interested. Your interest may be in their demise, but its still interest. Look at Ottawa, best team in the country by a long shot, but not nearly as many people interested in seeing Ottawa succeed as there are in seeing Toronto fail. Win or lose, Toronto is still the team that will bring in the most revenue for the CBC through advertising.
I've yet to see anybody come to my door and force me to watch any particular show, including Leaf games. I assume you have options, too.
I'm not sure where you live, but it doesn't seem to be too difficult to find another game on a different chanel here.

Because that is who the fans choose to watch and that is who the sponsors choose to support.

In all regions of Canada last year, the Leafs were the most watched team (including BC and Alberta).

The primary sponsors (Molson, Canadian Tire, and Proctor and Gamble) all pay 2x as much for a commercial on a maple Leaf HNIC broadcast than they do for a Edmonton or Calgary broadcast (Montreal, Ottawa, and Vancouver are in between)

As for the poster who said the Leafs haven't had a sellout for 30 straight years..........................the last Leaf game to not sell out was in 1932. The last Rangers game to not sell out was 1947. These two franchises have the longest streak of sell-outs for any professional franchise in North America

they also air Vancouver games :S on saturdays they have a leafs game, and then a vancouver game and if the nucks arent playing then its edmonton.

So they dont ONLY cater to the leafs.

The ratings don't lie. It's all about the cash, and losers or not, Toronto generates a lot of money in revenue and advertising. That about sums it up.
