Lincoln OFFERED to buy all the slaves anyway. In the slave states that remained loyal to the Union, all the slaves were freed and COMPENSATION paid to their owners.

The Civil War was about the EXPANSION of slavery to the western territories, NOT about slavery in the EXISTING Southern states. The most proximate clash before the firing on Fort Sumter was in the Kansas/Missouri conflict over establishing slavery in states NEW to the Union.

This rubric about 'states rights' is a complete misnomer, as no law had even come close to threatening the right of the existing slave states to practice their 'peculiar institution' even though it was destroying their economy and had turned the South into a colony of their cotton and sugar markets. The result of the Civil War was that the cotton market went to Egypt and the sugar market went to Central and South America, and the American South went into a decline from which it has yet to fully recover.

1. Who knows.
2.You mean without the civil war? It was Lincons plan to send the blacks back to Africa, and help them establish a nation there.
3.If 2 happened then we wouldn't do 3.

We would be called Southern Canada somewhere around 1949.

Wait... now that Canadian Banks are buying American Banks, maybe we would have been ahead of our time had that all happened.
